A small country with a population of 2.8 million people. Is it worth visiting?
I’ve been to a lot of eastern European countries. I find them a more fascinating and cultural than western European nations. Lithuania is no exception.
Atmosphere
Vilnius is a very chill and relaxed city. Weird, considering its the countries capital. It isn’t your typical crowded, busy, capital city. Perhaps it is more crowded in the summertime, but then again I’ve been to many European countries in the winter time, and Vilnius isn’t much of a busy city.
Pricing
Vilnius is probably the cheapest capital city I’ve visited. The crazy thing is they spend euros there, but it’s less expensive than countries that have a different currency altogether that you’ll have to convert to euro like Poland. You can get a breakfast meal for 3.99, which would be way more expensive in Ireland. Pricing alone makes Vilnius a perfect travel destination for a weekend if you’re on a tight budget. There’s no need to worry about money at all. Most things to see and do in Vilnius are free. For example, the money museum was a free entry which was pretty neat.
Getting around
Vilnius is such a small city that transport isn’t needed to get around. Just walking around the city is enough since everything is right around the corner. The only place you’ll probably ever need transport is to the airport. I spent 4 euro to get an uber to the airport, and it was a 15-minute drive. In Ireland, it’s 12 euro to get a cab to another town that is 15 minutes away.
Things to do
Now, this is kind of where the city lacks since it’s so small. You may get recommendations on google for lots of sites to visit in Vilnius, but the reality is because the city is so small, all the places are beside each other and aren’t spread out in any way. Just by walking to one site you’ll see three others on the way. As a comparison, I walked around the city and saw everything in 2 days, I was in Paris for one week walking around the city and still didn’t get to visit every site. There are museums, old cathedrals, monuments, clubs and that’s pretty much it.
Would I recommend Vilnius?
Definitely. It’s a lovely city, great atmosphere, great vibes. Perfect for a weekend trip or if you’re on a budget and want to get out and travel somewhwere.
